William W. Scherkenbach. The Deming Route to Quality and Productivity. CEEPress Books, George Washington University, Washington, D.C. 1992. 145pp.

The author is a former student of Deming's, who was hired in 1982 by Ford Motor Company as a leader for their quality improvement effort at Deming's suggestion.  In 1987 he joined General Motors as Group Director for Statistical and Process Improvement Methods for the Buick, Oldsmobile, Cadillac group.  This work is more technical in tone than many of the others on this list, and focuses heavily on the statistical thinking which is an integral part of quality management.  A strong focus throughout on process variation and control makes this perhaps the most useful book on the Deming approach for researchers, since this makes the links to research processes more obvious than a more philosophical treatment would.
