W. Edwards Deming. Out of the Crisis. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Center for Advanced Engineering Study, Cambridge, MA. 1986. 507pp. 

This widely referenced book has a choppy feel and can be difficult for a reader struggling to extract central concepts.  But it is filled with examples of things done wrong, and explanations of how a more thoughtful approach might have avoided a costly end.  There are some very interesting examples for the more statistically inclined reader.  This book in many places presents the reader with reasons to reconsider the conventional approach which may seem more natural to them.
